Step 5
Visit the apartment communities that you have decided on. This will give you a chance to meet the employees, look at the property, and determine what lease options they have. This visit to the apartment will help you decide. Don’t jump on the first great offer, make a day of it. Most apartments communities will hold there offers for at least 24 hours.

Step 6
Decide on where the apartment you want to live in. By now you should have all of the information to help you make the decision.

Start with options. Establish communication with 5 – 10 moving companies by getting a free moving quote. Depending on whether you are moving in-town or cross states, its best to work with movers that are most familiar with the area you are moving to. There are various ways to begin contact with these movers however gaining an unbiased opinion is critical. A moving directory like google business listings, provides a wide array of moving companies and is the best first step since their compensation is not based on any particular moving company you select.

Step 2
Schedule in-home appointments. After you receive and review each free moving quote and shortened the list of potential movers to 3 – 5, you should schedule an in-person walk-through. This will provide the movers with a better expectation of the size of the move and much more accurate cost assessment for you. Also, this is an opportunity for you to interview each mover. Do they sub-contract any of their work? Do they use 24 ft trucks or trailers to move your household items? How long have they been professional movers? Do they carry the proper Rta license and insurance? Does the moving company provide you with a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move”? Ask for references and other contact information (i.e., website, email address, office address, etc.).
Step 3
Never pay cash or large deposit before the move. This is for obvious reasons.

Step 4
Find out what responsibility the movers will take in the event of damages. If for any reason your household items are damaged, please know and understand upfront how the moving company will compensate or repair your damaged items.

How to Pack Your Kitchen Items to Make Unpacking Easier and Faster

Step 1
Take note of the various sizes of your every day plates and bowls. Purchase plain (not zip lock) plastic storage bags in which you will place individual plates, bowls and mugs. Before the movers arrive, or before you wrap your dishes in packing paper, place each plate, bowl and mug in a plastic bag. Do not seal the bag. Otherwise, each dish will be in a balloon which will take up more space in the packing box. When unpacking, the item is clean and can go straight into the cabinet. The plastic bags can be saved to be used for something else.

Step 2
Place sorted cutlery into zip lock bags. Squeeze out excess air and zip close. The items are ready to be wrapped for packing. I recommend placing spoons, forks, and knives in separate bags so you don’t have to sort them when putting them back in the silverware organizer. Also, place items from the same drawer in a bag or two and label the bag (drawer 1, drawer 2, etc.). This simplifies organizing your items in your new kitchen. When unpacking, you know the items are clean and can be placed right into the drawer.

Step 3
Wrap pots, pans and other over-sized items in paper towels and place in clean, plastic storage bins. If you are packing breakable (glass) pots and pans, be sure to wrap with enough paper towels that you cannot feel the shape of the items. You can also use pot holders and kitchen towels for extra padding. This also saves space since you are not packing them in their own box. Mark the bin “DO NOT RE-PACK” and seal with packing tape. Since the paper towels and plastic storage bin are clean, you can rest easy that the pots and pans are ready to go straight into the cabinet when you unpack. The paper towels are clean and can be used for cleaning. In fact, use them to clean the cabinets, counter tops and drawers in the new kitchen!

Places to find free Moving Boxes

If you have to move, the physical effort and time it takes to pack can contribute to an already-stressful situation. One of the challenges you may to face is getting moving boxes to pack your belongings without adding to your expenses.

Tell everyone you know that you are moving. Ask your neighbors, friends, family and co-workers if they have any boxes you can use. Also ask them if they know someone who can provide boxes for you. Some of your friends and family may work at places that have moving boxes you can use.
Local stores may be able to provide the boxes you need. You stand a better chance if you approach owners of stores where you shop frequently. Approach the owners of liquor stores in your area. They need heavy-duty boxes to carry the quantities of glass containers they sell.

Moving Companies
If you’ve hired a moving company, ask if they have boxes you can use to pack your belongings. If you’re shopping for a moving company, let them know that your business will go to the one who can provide you with boxes.

Postal Service
Your Local Post Office may provide you with free boxes that are normally used for shipping. These boxes come in a range of sizes. The smaller ones can be used for small dishes and breakables. These boxes may not be extremely sturdy, but they can help if you’re in a pinch and need boxes quickly.

Gumtree

Gumtree may be a long shot, but it provides a risk-free place to check. Occasionally, you can find free boxes available in the For Sale section. You can also place an ad on Gumtree to advertise your need for boxes. If someone stumbles upon your ad and has boxes they need to get rid of, you may be in luck.

Apartment Complexes
Contact apartment complexes in your community. Ask if they have new tenants moving in that have left extra boxes that you can use. Also check the bulletin boards near the mailboxes of apartment complexes in your neighborhood. Many of these bulletin boards have signs placed by people requesting a roommate. Those people may have boxes on their hands from someone who has recently moved out of their apartment.

Moving to a new city can be scary and exciting at the same time. Once you have a job secured and you know the area you are moving to, there are things you can do to prepare yourself to make the move as easy as possible, logistically, mentally and emotionally.

Step 1

Learn about the city you are moving to.Get familiar with the area. One of the best ways to get a feel for the different areas when deciding on where to look for housing is by researching online and talking with local residents who already know the area. One way you can get connected with local residents is through the City-data website. Go to the Forums and look up the state you will be moving too. You can search topics to see if others have already posted comments or questions similar to what you want to know and read the related discussions, or if you can’t find what you are looking for, then start a new discussion to get the info you need. For example, if your new job will be in a suburb of Newtown, you can search the surrounding suburbs, find out the names of the close areas and then create a posting asking people’s opinions of those different areas to help you narrow down your search. You can ask questions such as: Out of Enmore, Stanmore, and Central, which have the best schools? What would the commute be like from each of these places to work each day? What are the neighborhoods like? What kind of vibe does the place have? Which place is more diverse? Which place gets you the most house for your money? Which has the best restaurants and nightlife? Etc.” Then after you submit you posting, be sure to subscribe to it so you get notifications whenever someone adds their input. Scour the internet to find out everything you can to familiarize yourself with the new place.

Step 2
Once you have narrowed down the areas/neighborhoods where you want to live when you move, contact a real estate agent or an apartment-leasing agent to help you find listings that suit your needs. You can also do your own searches on websites such as gumtree.com.au. If you are looking to buy right away, then you would definitely want to consider using a real estate agent. However, if you are moving to an area that you have never been and are totally unfamiliar with, it might be wise to rent for the first 6 months to a year until you get a feel for the area and the different neighborhoods.

Step 3
Once you have a list of housing options you want to check out, make a trip to the area so you can view them out in person and decide which one is right for you. If you are moving to a really large metropolitan area, you might want to give yourself at least 3 days to get around and check out the different places. Hopefully you can negotiate with your employer to have the company pay for the trip and the moving expenses. But if it’s not possible for you to visit before you move, then just really do your research and double check any apartment listing you are interested in on an apartment rating website.

Step 4
Negotiate with the movers. If you will be needing to hire a moving company to help you transport your belongings, call at least 3 different movers for price quotes so you can get the lowest possible price on your moving expenses. Once you get your lowest quote, you might want to call back the other movers to see if they want to compete for your business by matching or lowering their fee.

Step 5
Let all your friends and family know as soon as you know for sure that you will be moving. Giving them as much warning as possible helps you all have time to adjust to the idea that you will be leaving so you can cherish the time you have left and not be as sad when you go. When sharing the news with family, friends, neighbors or coworkers, ask if they know anyone in that area by chance. Maybe you’ll be able to meet them and instantly have a new friend, or at least someone who can give you the inside scoop and show you around after you move.

How to Pack Household Items for a Move

Start the packing process weeks ahead of when you’ll be moving. Remember, when packing, organization is key!

Step 1
Set aside items you will need up until the last moment, such as cleaning supplies, children’s toys, bedding and pet food.

Step 2
Set aside and plan how you will transport items that can’t easily be packed. These include plants and pets.

Step 3
Figure out what supplies you’ll need, such as boxes, tape, marking pens and cushioning material such as bubble wrap.

Step 4
Repack items such as computers, TVs and other electronics in their original boxes with their original packing material, if possible.

Step 5
Label boxes on more than one side, including both the box’s contents and the room in which it belongs.

Step 6
Pack fragile items carefully.

Step 7
Pack books in small boxes; they’re heavier than you’d think!

Step 8
Roll up carpets and rugs and tie them securely.

Step 9
Pack bedding last; use as much as you can for cushioning.

Step 10
Check the basement, the garage, the attic, roof and outdoors for items you might have overlooked.

Step 11
Store, sell or donate anything you aren’t taking with you.

How to Move to an Apartment

Step 1
Begin your apartment search by narrowing your options to one or two specific areas. You may want to live close to where you work or to where friends and family members live.
Step 2
Narrow down your search to those apartments that you can afford. A good rule of thumb is that your rent should be equal to no more than one-third of your total monthly income. You can compare complexes on websites or by driving through neighborhoods and stopping at realestate offices.

Step 3
Take your ID along: When stopping at realestate office, make sure you have your state identification or driver’s license with you because they will need it in order for them to show you an apartment. Some apartment offices stay busy so it may be easier to call ahead and schedule an appointment to view an apartment.

Step 4
Make a deposit: You will be asked to put a deposit on your new apartment and pay a non-refundable application fee ranging from $15 to $35. The application will require references and employment information.

Step 5
Wait: It may take a few days for the realestate office to approve your application, but once it is approved you should be all set to begin packing for your move.

Packing & Moving

Step 1
Begin going through your belongings at least one month prior to your move. Give away anything that you no longer use or need to avoid moving unnecessary items.

Step 2
Rent a moving truck, reserving one on-line or over the phone in advance. If you need extra moving help you will want to schedule it in advance as well.

Step 3
Use small boxes for heavy items, such as books, and for fragile items. Use newspaper to wrap dishes and other glass items. Label these boxes as fragile, so they are not put underneath heavier boxes.

Step 4
Place clothes into bags or boxes. Wardrobe boxes can be purchased that allow your clothes to remain hanging during the move.

Step 5
Wrap breakable furniture and appliances with blankets, using tape to secure them.

How to move a filing cabinet?

Step 1
Remove the contents of the file cabinet and place them in boxes. Number the boxes in the order the files came out. With a heavy duty file cabinet, you can leave the bottom drawer loaded, but keep in mind that any weight in the drawers increases the chances of the drawers not working correctly after the move. If you’re not sure of the quality of the file cabinet, it’s safest to empty the whole thing.

Step 2
Lock the cabinet. If there is no lock, tape the doors shut. Painters tape will be easiest to remove and cause the least damage.

Step 3
Tip the file cabinet back a few degrees on it’s back edge or side. Slide the furniture dolly under it. Ideally you’ll want two people for this step. One tips the cabinet, and the other slides the dolly.

Step 4
Tip the cabinet back upright on the dolly. At no time should you have to lift the file cabinet.

Step 5
Roll the file cabinet to the new location.

Step 6
Tip the cabinet to it’s back or side so one edge is on the floor. Ideally you want a second person for this.

Step 7
Pull or kick the dolly out from under the file cabinet.

Step 8
Tip the file cabinet back down, and slide into place over carpet. If the floor is not carpet, have two people lift it on the ends and move it into place.

Step 9
Move the boxes and load them back into the file cabinet.

Make necessary travel arrangements, such as hotel reservations for a move that will take longer than a day, or separate plane or car arrangements if any family members will be traveling separately.

Step 6
Rent or purchase appropriate moving aids, such as pry bars and appliance dollies for heavier furniture and appliances.

Step 7
Sell or donate unwanted items – this will reduce your load and help make the moving process much easier.

Step 8
Arrange to have family members or friends help you load your belongings at your old home and unload once you reach your destination.
